Homeless and Neglected Children in the 19th Century In his novel Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain creates a fictional character that must confront very real problems as a result of cultural and social issues of the time. Many of these such issues, slavery and race relations being the most prominent, are dealt with significantly by the author, but another issue not addressed in any sort of overtly significant manner is the plight of homeless, neglected, and otherwise abused children in the 19th century. This lab report recaps the procedure and results of the lab. The chemical process studied in this lab was reduction, the process of reducing the number of bonds to oxygen and increasing the number of bonds to hydrogen. Procedure: Preparation of Vanillyl Alcohol 2. 5 mmol of vanillin were dissolved in 2. 5 mL of 1 M NaOH solution in a 25 mL Erlenmeyer flask. The flask was swirled to produce a homogeneous yellow solution. The flask was swirled in an ice-water bath for 1-2 minutes and the solution was cooled to approximately 10Â °C. 1. 95 mmol of NaBH4 was added while the solution was constantly swirled. It was added in three to four portions over a period of 3 minutes. The solution was allowed to stand undisturbed for 30 minutes at room temperature. After the time period, the flask was cooled in an ice-water bath and 3 M HCl was added dropwise with swirling. HCl was added until the pH of the solution was distinctly acidic to pH paper. The solution was gently cooled and the side of the flask was gently scratched with a glass rod to induce recrystallization. The crude product was suction filtered using a Buchner or Hirsch funnel and was washed with three small portions of cold water. The crystals were allowed to air dry for several minutes while suction continued to eliminate excess water. The crude product was recrystallized from ethyl acetate. The dried crystals were weighed and a melting point was obtained. The mechanism of the lab involved reduction. Sodium borohydride was used to reduce the aldehyde on the vanillin molecule, which left the oxygen with a negative charge. Feature Article Relative Rates:Â  Free-Radical Bromination HCl then reacted with the negative oxygen on vanillin, and the oxygen then became protonated, which made another alcohol on the benzene ring. The melting point range obtained for vanillyl alcohol was between 75-90Â °C. The actual melting point was 115Â °C, which was approximately 25 degrees higher than the experimental values. The reason for this melting point difference can be attributed to impurities that developed throughout the procedure. The percent yield from the original sample was 63. 9%. A decent percentage of the original sample was lost throughout the reduction process of vanillin to vanillyl alcohol. Conclusion: Vanillin was reduced to vanillyl alcohol which obtained a melting point of 75-90Â °C. The percent yield from the original sample was 63. 99%. The mechanism involved the reduction of vanillin to vanillyl alcohol, which increased the number of bonds to hydrogen and decreased the number of bonds to oxygen by the reduction of a carbonyl. IOP Spike Control after Intravitreal Anti-VEGF In ophthalmology many ophthalmic procedures are there in which there is a spike of intraocular pressure after the procedures. Cataract surgery, argon laser trabulectomy (ALT), yag laser capsulotomy, yag laser iridotomy, trabulectomy, pars plana vitrectomy are few to be named. The new anti VEGF therapy is an addition to the prior list. Many IOP lowering drugs have been used in different procedures to stop these spikes. For ALT 1% apraclonidine, an alpha agonist has been found to be the most effective against the IOP spikes, but 0.5% has also been found to be equally effective. Brimonidine an alpha 2 adrenergic agonist has also been shown to be effective and safe choice. For cataract surgery different drugs have been used treat the postoperative increase in IOP. These include carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, prostaglandin analogs like latanoprost, alpha agonists like apraclonidine and brimonidine, beta-blockers and miotics (intracameral carbachol and acetylcholine). Similarly intravitreal injection of triamcinolone has been complicated with a rise of IOP and have been controlled effectively by beta blockers, but some may need aggressive treatment. Different researchers have worked on the control of acute spikes after the intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF, showing varied result. Some have advocated the use of IOP lowering medicine while other negating the need all together. Lim Young et al showed that the prophylactic use of fixed dorsolamide/timolol combination eye drops before the intravitreal anti-VEGF injection was a safe method of preventing IOP spikes occurring immediately after the intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF. He showed that the mean IOP at 5 minutes and 30 minutes postoperative was 14.12 Â ± 4.18 mm Hg and 10.87 Â ± 1.58 mm Hg in group 1 using IOP lowering medication while it was 28.21 Â ± 3.16 mm Hg and 17.48 Â ± 2.34 mm Hg in control group 2, respectively.9 He showed that there was a significant lowering of mean IOP at each reading at 5 minutes of interval. Frenkel et al showed the use of IOP-lowering medication prior to injection of pegaptanib, ranibizumab, or bevacizumab had little effect on the IOP spike. The failure of lowering the IOP spike was implicated to be due to the inability of these medications to counteract the volume-related mechanism of the IOP spikes after anti-VEGF injections. However, it was stated that there might be benefit to lower the IOP before intravitreal injection. In their study 2 cases of sudden loss of vision were reported due to the high IOP spike which prompted them to do anterior chamber paracentesis.8 It was also stated that the prophylactic use of medication in patients with advanced glaucoma receiving pegaptanib intravitreal injection or patients receiving 0.1 ml of bevacizumab could be considered because their study showed that it lowered IOP at the 3- to 10-minute interval in these patients. In another study done in 2013 the IOP lowering effect of Dorzolamide/Timolol and Brinzolamide/Timolol were compared with a control group. They measured the IOP after every 5 minutes for the first half hour and the next day and week after that. For all the 3 groups, the changes relative to the baseline at 5 and 30 minutes after intravitreal injection was found to be significant. Also when the groups were broken down as to whether receiving bevacizumab or ranibizumab, again the mean decrease of IOP compared to the control group was found significant. El Chehab et al have also found that the prophylactic use of fixed combination of timolol with brimonidine or dorzolamide and of 1% apraclonidine could not only reduce the IOP spikes but also their duration; and both the combination and 1% apraclonidine had equal effect. However the use of oral acetzolamide 20 minutes prior to the intravitreal injection was not proven to be effective. Evaluating the efficacy of timolol 0.5 % and brimonidine 0.2 % eye drops as a fixed combination in preventing IOP spikes Theoulakis et al found that twice a day instillation on the day before and before the time of injection in eyes which were scheduled for intravitreal ranibizumab was a safe and also effective in controlling the IOP spikes. IOP LOWERING MEDICATIONS Most of the IOP lowering medicines are administered topically. They are absorbed through the cornea and conjunctiva; mainly acting locally on the eye. Many anti glaucoma medicines have been used. The main groups of drugs are as following: BETA- ADRENERGICANTAGONISTS They are the most prescribed drugs of IOP control. There are a total of five topical beta-adrenergic antagonists which are currently FDA approved for managing high intra ocular pressure. They are timolol betaxolol, carteolol, metipranolol, levobunolol. Betaxolol is selective beta1 selective antagonist, and is safe to use this drug in patients with pulmonary and cardiac problems. The mechanism of action is to reduce IOP by decreasing the production of aqueous by inhibiting the production of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) in ciliary epithelium. The IOP reduction is upto 20 to 35%. The effects of beta blockers occur within an hour after its instillation. Timolol is available in the market in concentrations of 0.1%, 0.25% and 0.5%. The recommended dosage is 1 drop two times a day. Burning, allergy and corneal epithelial erosions are the main ocular side effects. It can be absorbed systemically and can cause systemic side effects like bronchospasm, bradycardia, hypotension, respiratory failure. Timolol maleate has a molecular weight of 432.50. It is an odorless, white, crystalline powder that is soluble in methanol, water and alcohol. It is compounded as an isotonic, sterile, buffered solution available in two strengths: 0.25% Timolol maleate eye drops contains 2.5 mg of timolol (about 3.4 mg of timolol maleate). It has a pH of approximately 7.0, and an osmolarity of 274-328 milliosmole. And each ml of 0.5% Timolol Maleate eye drops contains 5 mg of timolol (about 6.8 mg of timolol maleate). The Inactive ingredients are usually monobasic and dibasic sodium phosphate and sodium hydroxide to adjust pH. Preservative used is Benzalkonium chloride 0.01%. PARA SYMPATHOMIMETIC AGENTS They act by stimulating sphincter pupillae and ciliary body by acting on the muscarinic receptors. They cause the contraction of the ciliary muscles which thus increases the aqueous outflow through the trabecular meshwork. Pilocarpine is the commercially available drug in this group and is compounded in concentration of 1%, 2%, 3%, and 4% and the recommended dosage is 1 drop 4 times per day. Ocular side effects are miosis, induced myopia with brow ache, retinal detachment, and cataract. Systemic side effects after its absorption can be of diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and bronchial spasm. CARBONIC ANHYDRASE INHIBITORS (CAIs) The enzyme required for aqueous formation is carbonic anhydrase. The CAIs cause inhibition of this enzyme and thus cause a decrease in the aqueous humor secretion by the ciliary epithelium. Carbonic anhydrase is required for catalyzing the reaction of CO2 to H2CO3 which further splits into HCO3 _ and H+. The bicarbonate ions are pumped along with sodium ions into the posterior chamber along with diffusion of water for the formation of aqueous humor. Carbonic anhydrase is present in ciliary body in excess. 99.9 % of the enzyme must be inhibited before a significant decrease in IOP can occur. Dorzolamide and brinzolamide are the commercially available eye drops in market. They have a good corneal penetration, and are also water soluble. These agents are able to reduce IOP upto 14-17%. Adverse effects of topical CAIs are burning and stinging of eyes on instillation, conjunctivitis, blephritis, corneal allergy, corneal punctuates keratitis and can also cause bitter taste. The systemic used CAIs are methazolamide and acetazolamide. They also cause inhibition of carbonic anhydrase in ciliary epithlium thus reducing the reduction of aqueous humor. As it is taken orally systemic side effects of CAIs include metabolic acidosis, leading to alkaline diuresis which result in hypokalemia. So potassium levels should be regularly checked in patients using CAIs on long term basis and oral potassium supplement should be recommended to all these patients. Other side effects include renal stones formation and central nervous system side effects like numbness and tingling of hands and feet, depression, anorexia, and nausea. Dorzolamide hydrochloride has a molecular weight of 360.91. It is a white to off-white in colour, in a crystalline powder form, which is also soluble in water, methanol and ethanol. ADRENERGIC AGONISTS Adrenergic agonists act by increasing the uveoscleral and trabecular meshwork outflow thus causing decrease in IOP. Epinephrine has a mixed action of being an alpha and a beta agonist. Its effect usually begins at 1 hour and reaches a maximum at 2-6 hours. Topical epinephrine drops usage has been stopped due to frequent systemic side effects of headache, palpitation and cardiac arrhythmias. The main ocular side effect is cystoid macular edema and black pigmentation of conjunctiva. Commercially available topical form is dipivefrin hydrochloride 0.1%eye drops, which is a prodrug of epinephrine. It is converted by the enzyme esterase into epinephrine in the cornea. Because of its high lipid solubility and corneal penetration a low dose is required as compared to epinephrine and thus has less side effects. The selective alpha 2 agonist apraclonidine and brimonidine are indirect acting adrenergic agonist which act by decreasing aqueous production and also the episcleral venous pressure and thus improving the trabecular outflow. Apraclonidine is associated with tachyphylaxis while brimonidine has less of this problem. Brimonidine tartrate is available commercially in 0.25 and 0.15% eye drops. Its reduces IOP by 26% at 2 hour of interval. PROSTAGLANDIN ANALOGUES Prostaglandin analogues are relatively a new class of IOP lowering drugs. Four prostaglandin analogues have been approved by the FDA for clinical use. Latanoprost was the pioneer drug to be developed and used in this group. Others are travoprost, bimatoprost, and unoprostone. Latanoprost is a pro drug which penetrates the cornea and then is turned into active form. It enhances the uveoscleral outflow and thus lowers the IOP upto 25-35%. The dosage is one drop per day which makes the compliance of the patient better. The main ocular side effect is darkening of the iris and the periocular skin, by increase in the number of melanosomes in the melanocytes. Other side effects include conjunctival hyperemia, hypertrichosis, uveitis and cystoid macular edema. Systemic side effects are flu like symptoms, skin rash and uterine bleeding. OSMOTIC AGENTS Osmotic agents act by decreasing the vitreous volume by removing the liquid out of the eye into the circulation. The osmotic agents can be given orally or intravenously. Oral agent is glycerin while urea and mannitol are given intravenously. The osmotic activity is dependent upon the number of particles in the solution which cannot cross over and maintains the osmotic gradient between the compartments. Mannitol is given intravenously because it cannot be absorbed from the gastro-intestinal tract. A rebound increase in IOP and local tissue necrosis limit the use of urea. Glycerin is most commonly used oral osmotic agent which is given along with cracked ice to dilute its nauseating feeling. In patients with diabetes a non-metabolized sugar isosorbide can be used instead. Several fixed combinations have been developed which are available in markets used for IOP-lowering. Most of these fixed combinations contain timolol (dosed once or twice daily) combined with either adrenergic agonists, prostaglandin analogs, and CAIs. COMBINATION Fixed combination timolol maleate 0.5% with dorzolamide hydrochloride 2% was first introduced in market in 1998. Each milliliter of drug consisting of 6.83 mg timolol maleate and 22.26 mg dorzolamide hydrochloride. Timolol inhibits aqueous humor production by down-regulating adenylate cyclase by inhibiting ÃŽ ²2-adrenergic receptor sites on the ciliary process . While dorzolamide acts as a selective inhibitor of Carbonic anhydrase II enzyme, present on the ciliary process. The local bicarbonate production is slowed down, which as a result decreases sodium and fluid transport and, finally, decreases the aqueous humor production thus lowering the IOP. Because the mechanisms of action of both the drugs differ, they provide an additive effect when used together. Fixed combinations of drugs have been found to improve the compliance of the patient by reducing the number of eye drops used daily. Moreover the IOP-lowering effect of fixed combination timolol and dorzolamide was found to be greater than that of either drug instilled as monotherapy. In addition the load of preservative is also reduced along with any wash out of drug when the drugs in monotherapy are instilled one after the other.

Thespis, the father of the tragedy, created an actor who talked with the leader of the chorus to further make the importance of the chorus seen. In Greek tragedy, three masters were paramount. They were Aeschylus, Sophocles, and Euripides. These three playwrights all wrote for the festivals of Dionysius, but none of the three were alike. Aeschylus writes about Athenian power, arrogance, and ancient rule. Sophocles accepts the gods as the way they are. He does not believe in the violation of cosmic order. Euripides questions spirit. He also faults the old way of doing things. Every tragedy has a tragic situation in which the tragic hero finds himself. There are two basic tragic situations. The most common situation is a man between two clashing principles. Every situation results in sorrow and suffering for the protagonist, or tragic hero. Creon is the tragic hero who suffers dearly for his situation. A choice is imperative to a tragic situation. In tragic situations, a conclusion must be made, or has already been made, which results in suffering for the hero.

In this analysis a summary of the article will be provided, the type of information discussed in the article will be given, as well as if the information in this article should be considered reliable and valid. Summary This article is based on basic science research and the role that a team dynamic has on a student. What studies have found is that while the technical portion of research can pose as a challenge, student researchers are often challenged with thriving in various team dynamics as well (Woeste & Barhamm, 2012). Woeste and Barham (2012) explains that understanding the preferred learning style of a student can pose as an advantage for mentors because it allows them to have a better understanding of how meet these challenges. In this article, the authors also chronicles the background of working alongside student researchers whom prefer different learning styles. The authors also correlate this information with how being well-informed on students’ preferred learning styles can contribute towards creating an environment enriched in positive learning experiences, which ultimately results in a winning combination for the team as a whole (Woeste & Barham, 2012). Type of Information The first section of the research paper introduces the two student researchers and his or her preferred learning style. Research student one  (SR1) had a preferred learning style of kinesthetic and research student two (SR2) had a preferred learning style of visual, with both agreeing that auditory was the least preferred learning style. According to Woeste and Barhman, â€Å"The nature of the basic science research required strict adherence to sterile technique, chemical hygiene protocols, quality control guidelines, and handling of microbiological specimens† (2012, pg. 64). Both research students were then asked to demonstrate various techniques needed in basic science research and both did so accordingly, displaying a throrough understanding and competence in the techniques required (Woeste & Barham, 2012). The next section chronicles the beginning of the project. After receiving a detailed plan from the grant application, the student researchers were asked to investigate and report the timing of adherence for bacteria to different substances (Woeste & Barham, 2012). Right away it was noticed that SR1 was experiencing difficulty starting anything new and although SR1 was able to take over once receiving help, there was a significant reoccurrence of the same issue (Woeste & Barham, 2012). However, after moving SR1 from the office space to the laboratory where he or she could have a hands-on approach to using instruments and protocols, SR1 displayed competence in the ability to begin and he or she began a great source of contribution by manipulating items to help in the creative part of the process (Woeste & Barham, 2012). By moving SR1 from the office to the laboratory, the student researcher was able to contribute as well as learn in a learning style that was best suited for his or her needs. While SR2 did not display the need for a hands-on approach to develop new ideas for various parts of the project, it was quickly noticed that SR2 required a need to write down all protocols and information in regard to the project (Woeste & Barham, 2012). Due to the fact that all research should be documented, SR2 was able to contribute to the documentation aspect of the research (Woeste & Barham, 2012). In the end, SR2 was also able to contribute in a manner that benefited the project as well as suited his or her preferred learning style just as SR1 was and together the two complemented one another. Since both students preferred auditory learning least, they were both given sample question that he or she may encounter during the presentation as a way to ease nerves and prepare. The next section of this article explains how SR1 and SR2 did during the  presentation. Both students answered questions and provided information in a manner that was in coherence with each of their learning styles. SR1 spoke with hand gestures, motions, and simulated steps in the laboratory while SR2 referred to the visual poster used in the delivery of the presentation to provide information and answer questions (Woeste & Barham, 2012). The last section of this article includes the conclusion and in findings that were discovered throughout this project. Throughout this project, the authors discovered that taking a learning-center approach, students are able to learn better and work together more efficiently because it attempts to â€Å"contextualize the construct of learning styles, with the ultimate goal of improving pedagogical practice† (Woeste & Barhman, 2012, p. 65). Conclusion Providing an analysis on a research article requires much more depth and thought than simply reading the content in the article. A reader must begin with first understanding what the article is about and who the authors are and the source from which the article is coming from. Once a student has done this, an outline should be created of each section in the article and a summary should be developed. A summary will help the student to easily identify the main points in the article. After doing so, a highlight of each section should be done so that a quick, yet thorough understanding of the article can be assessed. How We Found the Data Few 7th graders take the SAT / ACT, so finding out what's a good or bad score is not as easy as looking at a table of percentiles from the test makers. Instead, we use two unique data sets: the Duke TIP program data set and the John Hopkins CTY data set. (In regards to the new SAT, we came up with these estimates based on data from the old version of the SAT, but we expect them to stay pretty accurate for the new version of the testthat will have its first administrationin March 2016.) These are groups of very talented 7th graders who take the SAT / ACT, so we can't just take the average and distribution of these data sets to look for an average for all 7th graders. Instead, we used a statistical technique called quantile matching / maximum likelihood to infer the distribution of all 7th graders. The two data sets agree, and here arethe results. Results: Distribution of 7th Grade ACT / SAT Scores The average scores of a 7th grade student are lower than those of a high school student. In fact, we find that the scores on the SAT are a full 400points lower, while the scores on the ACT are about 10 points lower. Therefore, the SAT score of the median7th grader is about a 300 per section on the SAT, while the ACT score of the median7th grader is about a 10. A standard deviation in the SAT is around 100 points per section, and is around a 6 on the ACT. This means that the scores translate as follows: Interpretation Percentile ACT Score SAT Score Below Average 25% 4 200 Average 50% 10 300 Above Average 75% 16 400 Excellent 95% 23 500 What this data shows us is that, if you score about an 10 on the ACT or a 300on each section of the SAT (or a 600 with both sections combined), you're getting about the average score for a 7th grader. Both physically and mentally Essays Both physically and mentally Essay Both physically and mentally Essay In Captain Corellis Mandolin, Alekos is a character who is extremely isolated from civilization, both physically and mentally, as his way of thinking, innocent and almost childish, contrasts deeply with that of most of the central people of the novel, military members which are obviously connected to the war, and the whole situation itself. Alekos world of fireworks and diversion is not other than the crude and brutal world at war, factor constantly present in the readers thoughts, mainly due to De Berniies gory descriptions of the its horrors: The pieces of skull looked grey and were coated in membrane and thick blood. Some of the fluid was bright red, and some of it was crimson. He was still alive. Alekos acts as the authors main tool to express the pointlessness and stupidness of war and conflict altogether by contrasting his almost wise naivety and innocence with the corruption and evil of the act of war itself. We have stated the his characteristics exhibit an element of wisdom because he seems to always have a simple yet interesting panoramic perspective of the events, so for example, when there is a raging battle in the island below, Alekos thinks of the explosions as exciting fireworks: surely a nave position, but one that lowers the significance of human conflict immensely making it seem ridiculous, like children playing with toy rockets, leading the reader to rethink the true importance of ones actions overall, this effect of this and wise innocence is reinforced by Alekos age: at the beginning of the novel we are told that he is approximately sixty years old and as the years pass he seems equally strong: Alekos was a man who at sixty would be the same as he had been at twenty, thin and strong, a prodigy of slow endurance, as incapable of mercurial flight as any of his goats.  This element of omniscience and elevation (connected with divinity) is also apparent from his living location: high up Mt. Aenos where he can observe from an exteriorised perspective everything that happens on the island below and also from the fact that in Chapter I Dr. Iannis writings refer to a temple to god Zeus, the god of gods, in the summit of Mt. Aenos, giving Alekos character a clear divine connotation. The implausibility of Alekos is in this case much more deliberate and subtle, as an element of magical realism, this is to say, camouflaged by the narrative style and reactions of the characters among other devices, (feature proper of that literary technique) than in Brave New World. In this case the character is defined by this implausibility, instead of this last one being a residual product of the former. There is a clear purpose to symbolically represent the human value of well-led wisdom, a particularly significant one in context with the setting in which most of human knowledge is used to develop military tactics and weapons to destroy each other, therefore the aim of depicting war as senseless and idiotic is successfully accomplished at least in the sphere of influence Alekos within the storyline. In conclusion, the seemingly unrealistic or implausible characters in the context of each novel do play a crucial role in the development of the ideas the author wants to portray. In the first case, the Savage acts as the ambassador of our proper human passions in the Brave New World so that Huxleys point of view on the conflict presented, the trading of freedom and high art for ignorant bliss, is conveyed properly, using the necessary narrative subjective ness. However small carelessnesss in the plot create an involuntary implausibility in this character making it not at all convincing in the underlying levels, yet no less effective in the conceptual clash and further debate, which is the whole point of the novel. In Captain Corellis Mandolin a much different technique is employed by De Bernià ¯Ã‚ ¿Ã‚ ½res as we have observed, making of Alekos equally effective in transmitting the authors ideas as John, but doing so in a more artful and thought up way than Huxley through a subtle symbolic representation of the human values behind the authors call to innocence and modesty as the ultimate form of wisdom.
