The poem opens with lines that provide a description of the village Auburn – written in past tense – as the poet is recollecting the memories of the Irish village and fruits of his more than often travels to the villages in England. The poet dramatizes the plains of the villages and early visiting spring to allure peasants from migrating while inviting farmers and peasants from other countries. It is interesting to notice that the word ‘delayed’ adds wistfulness to the tone of the poem, as if the paradise in the form of village that Goldsmith has made up is going to get lost somehow. With these lines, he tries to explain that the land has been abandoned by its people leading to its ruin. People have left their homes to collapse, and their farms to ruin all in the chase of wealth leading to a progressive decline in the nature’s way of life. The poet also directs firmly towards the restorative times when money-making was considered more important than a person’s health and moral responsibilities. With this new life brought hopes of freedom, opportunity, and work.      In modern society, money and material wealth are always at the center of life. The American dream is no longer characterized by a Leave it to Beaver lifestyle, but rather much larger in scale. The world we live in today is a capitalistic society that targets itself at making enormous profits off the funds of consumers. Americans want to be rich so that they can gain more for themselves to fulfill their greed, which never can be fully satisfied. The majority of people in today’s society can be characterized as the â€Å"Takers†of the world.      This situation that has grown to be the common way of life has blossomed over time into the mess that we observe today. Greed did not always rule society the way it does today. Literature and memoirs from a by-gone era prove this to be especially true. In reviewing such works, much emphasis is placed upon community and family. The man was conventionally the head of the household and would labor intensely to earn the needed resources to supply for his family. None the less, families tended to be larger in those days with the mother at the forefront of household and child duties. Given this, these early people can be easily characterized as â€Å"Givers.†     Marie Tomasi’s Like Lesser Gods illustrates this way of life through the men that came to Granitetown Vermont from lands far away in search of work at the granite quarries. The infinite amount of work was immeasurable which gave security to the people who came to work in this new land of Vermont. In turn, this brought self-fulfillment to the people who worked there. Mr. Tiff recalled a letter he had received from Pietro while in Italy that characterizes his feelings: â€Å"It is beautiful, this Vermont granite we work, and its lifetime is that of the pyramids†¦You ask me if here I am content?

Problem Definition: Should Fe’nix accept the contract to broaden its position and potentially add $4million in additional sales, given the constraints of dedicating a large percent of their business to replicas – which may have an effect on their relationship with current dealers? II. Industry Analysis: According to the product-market matrix above, and after reading about the industry, it is apparent that Fe’nix del Sur competes in selling authentic artifacts to collectors. After some of their clients insisted on an expanded product line, Fe’nix del Sur started producing replicas of their authentic artifacts. The replicas, in return, have broadened the company’s market to include gift buyers and individuals looking for decorative items. III. Organizational Analysis: Fe’nix del Sur is a reputable importer of authentic Southwestern jewelry and pottery for collectors. They originally sourced Hopi and Navajo artifacts, but in recent years have expanded their product line to include pre-Columbian artifacts from Peru and Venezuela, along with tribal and burial artifacts from Africa. If Fe’nix del Sur accepts the contract, their business definition would change. Since the company’s main focus in currently on dealing authentic artifacts to collectors (exclusively through specialty dealers, firm-sponsored showings and a few exclusive department stores), the loyal collectors who continually purchase their products may start to look elsewhere if the company fully expands their product line to include many replicas. The company would no longer be in just the authentic jewelry and pottery business, but rather also in the â€Å"replica†business. Therefore, their new business definition would be altered to include being a producer of replicas for gift buyers. Through careful verification, Fe’nix del Sur is able to successfully determine the authenticity of South American and African artifacts. This skill has enabled Fe’nix del Sur to develop a national reputation as one of the most respected sources of these types of artifacts. Fe’nix del Sur’s distinctive competency, which sets them apart from department stores that sell only replicas, allows them to sell through suppliers with highly limited distribution. The company had originally established a solid relationship with the retailers that sold their products, often being the sole supplier to its clients. However, in more recent years, due to the increase in competition, Fe’nix Del Sur’s products are not the only products being sold at some of these retailers. In fact, some of the retailers are now sending out their own buyers to deal directly with some of the Hopi, Navajo and African sources – completely stepping past Fe’nix. Therefore, the company’s relationship with those retailers is not as strong due to an increase in consumer demand for both authentic artifacts and replicas. By accepting the contract, I feel that the relationship between Fe’nix del Sur and the retailers they currently deal with would change. Most of the larger specialty and exclusive department stores are now dealing directly themselves or with other suppliers. Forming this new relationship with the mass merchandiser chain, allowing them to buy at 10% below the company’s existing prices, would spell disaster for Fe’nix’s current business relationships. Once the other businesses that Fe’nix currently deals with find out about this 10% price cut, they will either find another importer of authentic artifacts and jewelry or they will demand the 10% price cut as well. If all businesses that they currently deal with demanded a 10% price cut, Fe’nix del Sur’s income statement would drastically change – probably not for the better. IV. Alternatives A. Accept Contract a. Advantages i. Fe’nix Del Sur can broaden their position in the replica segment ii. They can potentially add $4million in additional sales over and above their annual growth. iii. Fe’nix could become a competitor in the â€Å"replica†business b. Disadvantages iv. Fe’nix could lose their current clientele – such as the collectors they currently target v. Accepting the contract may affect their relationship with their current dealers by causing them to seek other importers that sell only â€Å"authentic†pieces vi. Being acquainted with a mass merchandiser could ruin the company’s image so loyal customers who frequently purchase Fe’nix’s items may start searching for artifacts that are imported through dealers that only sell â€Å"authentic†pieces vii. The 10% price cut for the mass merchandiser could hurt their reputation with all of their current suppliers. Cutting the price 10% for one type of retail outlet will cause all other stores to want the same treatment. This would be a disruptive change to Fe’nix’s business and their overall profit. viii. Fe’nix would have to increase their replica production almost three times B. Reject Contract c. Advantages ix. The company will maintain their current relationship with dealers and customers. x. Their current sales growth per year would more than likely remain constant. xi. They would not have to worry about a price cut for any retail outlet since they already have a solid clientele of suppliers who are buying their artifacts regularly. xii. Their production could remain constant – with no increase in the amount of replicas being produced. d. Disadvantages xiii. Fe’nix could lose the large increase in additional sales revenue that the mass merchandiser chain could help them achieve. xiv. The company could lose potential sales due to competition in the â€Å"replica†business if they don’t accept the contract. xv. They would not be able to capture a broader target market. V. Recommendation: After careful analysis and consideration of Fe’nix del Sur’s business foundations, I feel that it would be best to reject the contract at this point in time. Reviewing the advantages and disadvantages above, along with assessing Fe’nix’s current business definition led me to this conclusion. The company’s current sales revenue is about $25million, and has had steady sales growth for the past ten years with an annual increase of 20%. This large annual increase in sales can be greatly attributed to their core competency of being able to accurately verify the authenticity of South American and African artifacts. Over time, Fe’nix del Sur has established a national reputation as one of the most respected sources of these types of artifacts. Aside from their solid sales growth, Fe’nix has established great relationships with the specialty dealers and exclusive department stores that sell their products. Building solid relationships with clients is a process that takes a lot of time and attention. Without these relationships, Fe’nix’s sales would drastically decrease, possibly causing them to go out of business. Because the company has been selling to selective types of retail outlets, the end consumers (collectors) are very loyal to continually purchasing Fe’nix’s products. If Fe’nix del Sur accepted the contract, they would have to completely reposition their brand and business definition to include both replicas and authentic items. Because they are not in any danger of losing sales at this point in time, it would be wise for the company to continue business as they normally do. Just because an external opportunity exists does not mean that Fe’nix should take advantage of it. It seems as though the sales manager is very focused on the potential to add $4million in additional sales revenue. Although this may sound good at first thought, it is always wise to consider where the business stands at the present. Overall, the contract is too demanding on Fe’nix. The company’s prices seem to already be accepted by the specialty dealers and exclusive department stores; therefore, cutting their prices by 10% for one retail outlet will lead to relationship issues down the line. These long-term relationships that have taken years to nurture could be gone in a matter of months. Also, because Fe’nix is known for authentic artifacts, increasing their production of replicas three times would create a disruption in their normal way of doing business. Again, this would force Fe’nix del Sur to reposition its brand – possibly losing a lot of clientele in the process.

Rory noticed that the CEO never asked for details. Note, as both noun and verb, has been in the language since the Middle Ages. The earliest meaning of the noun was â€Å"a sign or symbol used in writing.†An early meaning of â€Å"to note†was â€Å"to put down a mark.†Eventually, the verb acquired additional meanings such as â€Å"to observe, to take notice of, to consider or study carefully.†Current usage includes these meanings as well as others, such as â€Å"to become aware of,†â€Å"to be struck by,†and â€Å"to put down in writing.†Notice in the sense of â€Å"to give notice of something†existed in the 15th century, but notice as a verb to mean â€Å"to take notice†didn’t come along until the 17th century, at which time it was rejected as an unnecessary Scotticism or Americanism for the phrase â€Å"to take notice.†The 1763 Universal Dictionary of the English Language included this caveat: â€Å"Notice should not be used as a verb.†Writing a little later (1789), another commentator observed that some English writers were using notice as a verb, but that it was â€Å"better†to avoid it. To me, the use of noted in the first sentence suggests that Rory is keeping track of the CEO’s behavior for some purpose, whereas noticed implies that Rory has merely observed the behavior in passing and is not trying to discern any particular significance in it. Among such examples one can find the tragical drama â€Å"Death of a Salesman†, a play written by the outstanding American dramatist Arthur Asher Miller in 1949, is a work of art, revealing the tragedy of American Dream conception through the sorrowful history of unfortunate salesman. In this play Miller does not only depict an average American family, but draws a parallel between the family microcosm and the society, in which the dream of wealth and prosperity appears to be the most significant for the main hero of the story. According to Meyer â€Å"Miller placed his characters in a social context so that their behavior within the family suggests larger implications: the death of this salesman raises issues concerning the significance and value of the American dream of success (Meyer, 1401). American Tragedy Several examples from the play can prove this idea. Miller emphasizes the family dynamic as the father wants to take care of his sons and help them to become successful businessmen, but his sons, especially Biff, have got different ideas about what is important in life. These disagreements about life values foster the central conflict of the drama. All the family members Willy, Linda, Biff, and Happy represent the father, mother, and two sons of the average working class American family, where the father is the old-fashioned man, who believes that hard work, and regular income is the greatest value, the mother is always supporting her husband, and the sons are the representatives of a younger generation, whose more modern views hinder their father to fulfill his dream about success. Linda, who loves her husband above all, supports Willy and tries to help him in persuading their sons about finding job as she knows that Willy is addicted to the dream of success and money, but, conseque ntly, the attitude to work leads to problematic relationship between the family members. Finally, neglecting the human qualities in the family appears to be the crucial reason for Willy Lonman’s failure. Therefore, Miller tries to show his readers the impact of the society values on people. Having grown in the American society with its value of the American dream of success becomes destructive to the individuals. Along with artistic prerequisites, the author provides us with the analysis of social ills that the society has not only in the United States of America, but also throughout the whole materialistically oriented world. He does this by virtue of reflecting of separate individuals lives and the destiny of their relatives. Based on the American Dream worldview, the author displays the nayward of the wealth-oriented perspective. Moreover, he touches upon such issues as ethics distortion, relations between genders and relatives, and commercialism. The critique of the Death of a Salesman, written by Robert A. Martin, artfully describes the topic and gives a basis for being able to reason on the issues that the author provided and, simultaneously, to dispute on several Martin’s assertions. What is oblivion? What is delusion? All this refers to the state of mind, which confines one’s conscience within the frame of defined condition, and makes it harder to interpret reality in the way that makes it possible to accept it, despite all the obstacles. The person who is able to get rid of all of the illusions is a happy one. It is not the case with Willy Loman. He has a wife and two sons, and a great desire to become a successful merchandiser, trying to make the same of his older son, Biff. However, he fails: own success runs away, as well as his son, who does not wish to devote his life to the father’s profession. It is the reality, which is invisible for Willy, since he lives in a mirage. His life is ruined despite he does not observe it. And who is liable for that? In this play, Miller makes it possible for a reader to understand that the blame is both upon Willy Loman and the society he lives in. Wealth, career and reputation – these are the commandments that should be observed in order to have a happy life. That is what Willy Loman believes in. He is able to sacrifice everything in order to carry out these rules: morality, dignity and the happiness of his relatives. These rules exist in any place where one believes that the fortune issue depends on the external, material, or social circumstances. It is remarkable that Willy, as the main character of Death of a Salesman, is displayed by Miller as a religious fanatic. And his religion is American Dream itself. Such social illness promotes the means of psychological and moral breakdown of the personality, who is not able to fulfill the due self-imposed obligations. Thus, one can see that it constitutes both in mental and moral illness of Willy. He is living simultaneously in the past, present and future time and, therefore, occasionally, he cannot distinguish them. On the other hand, the moral illness represents itself i n double standards that Willy has forced to propagate. As it was mentioned earlier, the altar that was used by Willy in order to be able to sacrifice the victim of happiness stands in the temple of Success. And the society has built that. Thus, Willy’s brother personifies the image, which is the motive power that forces people to devote themselves to the things they are not fond of. The question is whether Willy Loman is right when he sacrifices his life for extra 20,000, and if he is a hero or a victim. The question is quite disputable. One side of the coin indicates the greatness and unselfishness of such an act, while another side is the fact that his deed is just a desperate and needless jerk. Robert A. Martin is absolutely right asserting â€Å"Willy is more than a victim of his society – he is a tragic victim in that he believes it is necessary to sacrifice his life in order to provide for his son†(103). And it is true. There is no need in such a deed. The situation is not critical. On the contrary, it is almost resolved. Thus, Robert A. Martin is right by saying that unknowingly Willy is striving to â€Å"retreat from the competitive business world to an agrarian, manual labor-oriented way of life†(105). That was his real dream, the dream of his soul. That is the tragedy that Miller revealed in order to indicate the inconsistence of success-oriented worldview. The tragedy that blinded the due world and true desires perception of Willy, as a member of the cruel society. The society forces him to give up his life for the purposes he actually does not believe in. To conclude, it is necessary to point out that in his play Death of a Salesman, Arthur Miller truly depicts the one of the most considerable issues that the American society and the entire humanity shall pay attention to. Partially, the American Dream concept, or in general the blind willingness to succeed materially, creates incentives in minds of the people that are potentially able to make their lives and those of their relatives agonizing and unhappy. That is what one can see in this play. Willy’s fanatic striving to fulfill all the three commandments of success results in the deprivation of the things that are more valuable than wealth, reputation and career. The U.S. State Department wanted the American zone to be as far north on the mainland of China as possible, including key points in Manchuria. The Army did not want to go into an area where few other forces were close at hand. In the planning for the surrender, two young American colonels, Dean Rusk and Charles Bonesteel, from the War Department's Operations and Plans Division (OPD), were assigned the task of findi ng a line. Neither was particularly knowledgeable about Korea or the Far East, although Rusk had served briefly with Gen. Joseph W. Stilwell in China during the war. Euthanasia - Let Them Die! Euthanasia is one of society's most widely and hotly debated moral issues. It has pained and exhausted the courts for entirely too long, questioning the ethics and morality of the issue. It is a never-ending loop that by no means considers our right, or the victim's right, to freedom. It has pierced the pocket books of American taxpayers extensively and should be put to rest with only this statement. Let them die! I believe that euthanasia is only debated and kept on the political agenda to keep the courts busy, thereby ensuring the security of political pocket books. The vast majority of the population is in favor of euthanasia. However, their elected candidates don't represent their views (Humphry). Thus eliminating their power of democracy and right to freedom. In this essay I will argue that euthanasia is not a concern of religious ethics but rather an entitlement of freedom. Euthanasia is typically broken into two categories: 1. Active euthanasia: The act of ...administering a lethal drug, or using other means that cause a persons death" (MacKinnon, 126). 2. Passive euthanasia: "Stopping (or not starting) some treatment, which allows a person to die, the persons condition causes his or her death, (MacKinnon, 126). Active euthanasia is typically the more highly debated of the two acts of euthanasia and is better known because of the actions of Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who has aided in many successful suicides. Passive euthanasia, on the other hand, is rarely debated and usually never enters the mind's eye because it is typically looked at as letting someone die naturally. In passive euthanasia one simply refuses treatment with the knowledge that death is imminent. This offers little debate for several reasons, primarily because it is seen as a natural way of dying. The exception, however, is that some religions refuse to accept treatment with the knowledge that without the treatment they will die. For example in the faith of the Jehovah's Witness, a child, who has been in a vicious car accident and is in need of blood, will die rather that accept treatment. This kind of passive euthanasia would come under much scrutiny, but be accepted because it is tied to religious convictions. In either case, active or passive, the victim will die. Good Style is a Reflection of a Writer Making Good Choices When putting pen to paper or typing on a keyboard in order to write something, a writer makes decisions. These decisions will result in what will be the writer’s finished work and will unintentionally reflect what the writer knows about writing style. In just trying to convey his or her ideas, a writer will follow rules of grammar and spelling as well as various advice accumulated through formal and informal education. If the writer has a good understanding of what they’ve learned, it will come out in their writing. After reading William Strunk Jr. and E.B. White’s The Elements of Style and Joseph M. Williams’ Style: Toward Clarity and Grace, I’ve learned that style is the culmination of many factors. Beginning in elementary school, people learn the basic, concrete rules of grammar. These aren’t so much elements of style as they are the foundation of writing. While necessary, a person can have perfect grammar but poor style. Many of the rules mentioned in the first chapter of Strunk and White, such as, â€Å"The number of the subject determines the number of the verb,†(9) are those that remain fairly rigid. If a writer didn’t follow this rule, and the number of subject and verb didn’t match for instance, the mistake would be glaringly obvious to the reader. Williams also discusses this toward the end of his book in a section titled â€Å"Real Rules.†Here, he includes rules such as not using double negatives and not substituting adjectives for adverbs (180). These rules are the building blocks of writing and that is why a writer would be looked down upon if he or she were to break them. Therefore, when writers break rules like thi s, it is usually to make a point by doing so. After these concrete rules, one begins to learn rules that are a little fuzzier in their application. These are rules that should be followed but can be broken given the right circumstances or if it is done systematically. For instance, Rule 14 in Strunk and White states, â€Å"Use the active voice.†What this means is using active verbs as opposed to inactive ones to prevent boring the reader.

The conventional learning is teacher centric and the students learn directly from their teacher. On the other hand, the project based learning is student centric while the teacher has only the role of a facilitator. Today’s world is more advanced in technology hence more complex. There are a lot of opportunities as well as various problems. Only those who can successfully handle such complex tasks can succeed in the modern life. The student needs to be prepared to face such things in their future life. And the project based learning in the classroom itself gives them a glimpse of challenges lying ahead and types of life surviving skills that needed to face them. In this method, the students are given challenging tasks, individually or in a group, which they need to carry out, using the concepts and principles they learned from the text books and their own common sense and creative thinking. Most of the tasks given to the students are related to real life situations. The basic idea behind using such real life situations is that it will make the student competent enough to construct solutions for such situations in the real life as when they arise. Project based learning method allows the students to decide themselves the course of actions in order to achieve the objective of the task or solve the given problem. They ask themselves the questions that need to be answered to produce the required answers. They themselves find out the answers and the ways to meet the set objectives. Their inherent qualities like leadership skills, problem solving skills and communication skills etc are forced to develop during this process. They also learn to think in a group which is essential in modern work culture. Unlike the passive role they played in the teacher centric learning method, the students are leaning things by actually doing it and experiencing the thrill as well as the difficulties of such learning. They get a chance to apply the knowledge they acquired from the text books on to the real life situations. The students direct themselves and this instills in them a sense of responsibility and their motivational levels will go up. The utilization of technology such as computer and internet etc give them a real clue about their immense utility. They get to experience the pride that is associated with the achievement of goals and they are ready for more. The teacher, who is also the facilitator, finally assesses the findings or suggestions submitted by the students and give his feedback. The feedback is very much important for the students and will help them make good the shortcoming and move forward. This way they horn their skills in every area of leaning and by the time they finish the schooling, they are ready to take on the numerous challenges that the life throws at them.

About the United States Constitution Essay
Essay 1 The Constitution of the United States created the form of government known as federalism. The national and state governments each have specific powers and functions, while also sharing some of the same powers. The Constitution made the agreement that any laws passed under the constitution would be the supreme law of the land. Three separate branches were created; the legislative, executive, and judicial. **********The new Constitution resolved the weaknesses of the Articles of Confederation to the extent that it created a new system of government that was equipped with the necessary powers needed to implement changes through compromises, the passing of laws, and the levying of taxes. During the Constitutional Convention of 1787, delegates met in Philadelphia to discuss the difficult problems the new nation faced. The Framers decided that in order to facilitate change within the nation, the Articles of Confederation needed to be replaced with a new plan for government that would give the federal government more power to implement the changes necessary for the progression of the nation. The next step was to devise a plan for the government that would be accepted by the people of the nation. A series of compromises, known as the Three-Fifths Compromise, and the Great Compromise, were created. The Virginia Plan, created by James Madison, included an executive branch, courts, and a bicameral legislature where representation in each house of Congress would be based on each state’s population. This plan enticed delegates from heavily populated states such as, New York; however, the small states feared a government subjugated by the large states would give them no say. The New Jersey Plan, devised by delegates from the smaller states, included a unicameral legislature in which states would have equal representation. Within this plan, Congress had the power to set taxes and regulate trade, which were powers it did not have under the Articles of Confederation. The New Jersey Plan was not accepted because ******larger states thought they should have more power. After six rigorous weeks, *the delegates came to a compromise later known as the Great Compromise. The compromise proposed that Congress have two houses, a Senate and a House of Representatives, in which the Senate granted equal representation and the House granted representation based on population. In the Articles of Confederation, there was only *one vote per state. To pass laws, nine out of the thirteen colonies had to be in favor of it and to make amendments; all thirteen colonies had to be in favor of the idea. The Great Compromise included that two thirds of the Senate and the House had to agree on a law or an amendment for it to be passed which was much easier. The compromise pleased both groups, but they were not completely satisfied. The Great Compromise directly dealt with the weaknesses within the Articles of Confederation and for this reason it gained popularity. The Three-Fifths Compromise came about after the Great Compromise which answered some of the remaining questions such as, who could vote. The compromise stated that every five enslaved persons counted for three free persons therefore, three-fifths of the slave population in each state would be used in determining representation in Congress. Americans were not all in favor of the Constitution at first, they were known as Anti-Federalists. They thought that the document would take away their liberties that Americans had fought hard to win from Great Britain. Their main argument was the new Constitution would create a strong, federal government and ignore the states and it lacked a bill of rights to protect individual freedoms. Those who were supporters of the document called themselves Federalists. They believed the Constitution would create a system of federalism, a form of government in which power is divided between the federal government and the states. The Federalist Papers, written by John Jay, Alexander Hamilton, and James Madison, was what won the Anti-Federalist’s support of the document. In a series of essays, they argued that the United States wouldn’t survive without a strong federal government and reassured the document would protect their nation. Both the Anti-Federalists and the Federalists came to the conclusion that if the Constitution was adopted, the new government would add a bill of rights. The Constitution was completely ratified in 1790 which made the thirteen independent states a united nation, The United States of America. The new Constitution created a framework for the government, which was the something the Articles of Confederation lacked. Three branches within the legislative were created to make sure the federal government would stay stable. Each branch had specific powers while also having the ability to check the powers of the other two branches. The legislative branch, also known as Congre ss, made the laws. The executive branch enforced the laws and is headed by a president and vice president. The judicial system was created in which the supreme court of the U.S would have the final say as to the constitutionality of laws. In order to avoid one of the branches from gaining too much power, the Framers included a system of checks and balances. This system allowed each branch of government to limit the power of the others. Therefore, the new Constitution resolved the weaknesses of the articles of confederation to the extent that it created a new system of government that was equipped with the necessary powers needed to implement changes through compromises, the passing of laws, and the levying of taxes. The government was able to tax and secure individual freedoms. The thirteen independent states became one nation, The United States of America. Although, not all of the problems of the Articles of Confederation were resolved, the new Constitution created a foundation for our government today.
